Regenerative Agriculture
A Matter of Life or Death
The circle–it’s everywhere.
You’ll find it underpinning the highest rungs of artistry, uniting complex forms and ideas. You’ll find it every two years on TV screens and banner ads, depicting the world’s greatest athletes pushing themselves to the brink of physical excellence.
It is the symbol of hope. It is the symbol of everlasting love. It is the shape that governs the revolutions of our planet, the activities of our solar system, the awesomeness of our ever-expanding universe. It is the shape that defines existence, human and otherwise; for from the earth we all emerge, and to the earth we must all return.
The circle of life–harmonious, infinite–without beginning, and without end.
But what is the fate of humanity, of Mother Nature and our earthly home, when the circle of life comes under grave threat? What’s worse, when that threat is of our own doing?
Imminent Danger
The modern world is a carbon pump–engrained and emerging technologies, advancing social structures, global connectivity, and exchange: all these mechanisms designed to enhance and evolve the human species are, ironically, proving responsible for its demise.
Toxic, harmful emissions are at unprecedented levels, and a frightening, irreversible spike in global temperatures is looming. By now, except to those who deny the evidence, all this is public knowledge–and yet (a fact not so widely known or appreciated) the solution to the current crisis is actually right beneath our feet, dormant in the soils from which we derive our sustenance and survival.
Farming Like The Earth Matters
While politicians dispute the best way to decarbonize the economy and shift markets away from fossil fuels, or while we nervously await a technological messiah to rescue us from danger, the climate crisis continues to worsen. In the time it will take to come to a consensus, implement changes, and radically alter our habitual way of life, it will be too little too late. We will have reached the tipping point, from which there is no return.
So, we must be practical–and at Circle Organics, we are practical people concerned for the welfare of planet Earth. Since the food system at large is responsible for over 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, then it stands to reason that the food system should be a primary area of focus–starting at the farm level.
Regenerative Agriculture
Again, we must acknowledge the power of the circle. Earth’s ecosystems hang in a delicate balance, and all is interconnected. We are carbon-based creatures. The soil beneath our feet is rich with carbon, and this is a good thing.
When the soil is permitted to retain its carbon, it regenerates itself and remains healthy and vital–plants thrive, crops grow taller, food tastes better, and adjacent waterways are kept clean.
But, when we destroy the soil, we deprive the soil of its carbon. And when we deprive the soil of its carbon, we forbid the soil from regenerating. The soil dies, and overloads the atmosphere with methane and carbon dioxide. In turn, the delicate balance of earth’s ecosystems is ruptured–plants shrink, crops yield less and less every year, food quality deteriorates, and waters stagnate.
Owing to the aggressive pursuit of industrial agriculture–destruction wrought by plow and pesticide–cracks form in the circle of life.
There Is a Better Way
At the heart of regenerative agriculture is the ‘sequestration’ of carbon, or the act of containing carbon within the soil, to reduce emissions on the one hand and protect the land and environment on the other. Five practices characterize the limbs of regenerative agriculture:
Conservation Tillage
Minimizing the disruption to the soil.
Cover Cropping
Planting solely to cover and protect the soil, with no intention to harvest.
Enhanced Crop Rotation
Limiting the time frame during which farmlands are allowed to lie fallow.
Residue Retention
Preventing the removal of residue from crops for the production of bio-energy.
Compost
Using plants and plant residue from main crops and cover crops to boost soil health.
None of these agricultural mechanisms is new–all have been around for millenia. They require nothing in the way of technological innovation to implement. And, when we apply them together in practice, we can sequester enough carbon to bring the world into a negative emissions scenario.
This is the goal–it must be the goal.
Our Commitment
As advocates of holistic wellness devoted to the preservation of the circle of life, we stand with the Regenerative Organic Alliance. Caring is no longer a luxury–it is a duty. And as entrepreneurs, we must also be faithful stewards of the land. The products we bring to you, rooted in Ancient Nutrition, are meant to help you heal, improve your life, and help you live better.
How treacherous it would be if those products were sourced and delivered to you at the expense of the land and our collective well-being–if they were not pure, unadulterated, natural, and 100% organic, as promised, in defense of and in preparation for a better future, in which we all care, and do our part.
